The Model High School for the Hearing Impaired lacked a number of facilities. Like other government schools of Pakistan it was under-funded and in disrepair.
The school compound was bare and gloomy leading to a depressing atmosphere. Our team tackled this by planting saplings and green plants in the school ground. Swings were installed to provide the students with a 'play-area'. Benches were also placed on various places on the school premises, which were otherwise bare and not used.
Tap water in Pakistan is generally impure and a great cause of illness among children. The school lacked the availability of clean drinking water which we found to be a great concern, and so a water cooler with a water filter was installed on campus.
We'd like to thank our school, without whose generous monetary contributions, this project would not have been a success.
How Your Group's Environmental Ethic Changed
Our environmental ethic is that, for people to be healthy and satisfied a healthy and pleasing environment is essential, and so we should do everything possible to improve the environment of an individual. This will contribute to make this world a much better place.
What We Wish We Had Known Before We Started.
The main problem that we faced during our project was the great amount of time and effort that went into the generation of the required amount of funds.
How We Made A Difference
We made a substantial difference to the 200 students of the Model High School by providing them with a better learning atmosphere as well as a healthier and cleaner environment. Not only that, but we installed a water cooler and filter that will provide the students with potable water, a resource they were previously lacking.
Who Or What Has Shaped Environmental Thinking In Your Culture Or Country?
Pakistan is a third world country so there has always been a great need of improving the environment and related issues. Programs at the government level have been unsuccessful due to a dire lack of funds and the great amount of work that needs to be done in this sector. So a great deal of effort is now being made at a smaller, private level. Considerable work is being done by NGO’s (Non Governmental Organizations) which will hopefully make a positive difference.
Next Steps
Members of our team plan to do volunteer work for NGO’s later in the summer, and we’ll continue participating in welfare and environmental projects in our universities.
